UFCW Local 881 Charitable Foundation

Evaluation criteria:

The UFCW Local 881 Charitable Foundation scholarships are awarded to members of Local 881 or their dependent children. Winners are selected based on academic achievement, career goals, leadership, and a demonstrated understanding of the value of Union Membership. Judges consist of an independent panel of labor leaders, educators, civic leaders, and/or public officials.

All applications must include the following:

  •  Completed application form
  •  Written essay (topic described below)
  •  Applicant’s complete official high school*and college (if applicable) transcripts; be sure GPA is included along with an explanation of how it is calculated (example: if your GPA is listed as 3.0, please document whether it is based on 4.0 or 5.0 scale)

*If applicant graduated from high school prior to 2021, a copy of his or her diploma can be submitted if transcripts
are unavailable. Failure to complete any part of the application will remove it from consideration.

Scholarship Award Amounts:

Amounts range from $1,000 to $4,000. These one-time cash awards are for study beginning in the Fall of 2026.

Application Deadline:

A complete application must be postmarked on or before Friday, February 28, 2026.
Applications postmarked after this deadline will not be considered.

Union Plus (AFL-CIO)

Deadline for the Union Plus (AFL-CIO) Scholarship for 2025 has passed. Application for 2026 Scholarship will be available in Fall of 2025.

Union Plus (AFL-CIO)

Evaluation Criteria:

This is a competitive scholarship available to Union members and their children. Current and retired members of unions participating in any Union Plus program, their spouses and their dependent children (as defined by IRS regulations) are eligible. Grandchildren are not eligible unless a legal dependent (as defined by IRS regulations).  At least one year of continuous union membership by the applicant, applicant’s spouse or parent (if applicant is a dependent). The one-year membership minimum must be satisfied by May 31 of the scholarship year. The applicant must be accepted into a U.S. accredited college, university, community college, technical or trade school at the time awards are issued. These one-time cash awards are for study beginning in the fall of the awarded year. 

Scholarship Award Amounts:

Amounts range from $500 to $4,000. These one-time cash awards are for study beginning in the Fall of 2026. Students may re-apply each year.

Application Deadline:

A complete application must be received on or before 12:00 pm (EST) on Saturday, January 31, 2026. Late
applications will not be considered.

William A. Lee Memorial Scholarship

Deadline for the Chicago Federation of Labor (CFL) William A. Lee Memorial Scholarship for 2025 has passed. Application for 2026 Scholarship will be available in Fall of 2025.

William A. Lee Memorial Scholarship

Evaluation Criteria:

CFL Scholarships are awarded to high school seniors. The applicant or their parent must be a Union Member. The applicant must choose to enter either the Random Drawing or the Academic Competition.
Scholarship Award Amounts:
10 scholarships are awarded to high school seniors valued at $2,000 each, to five winners of the Academic Competition and five winners of the Random Drawing.

Application Deadline:

Applications will only be accepted electronically VIA EMAIL. Completed applications must be received by the Chicago Federation of Labor by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024. Either the applicant or the applicant’s parent must be a member in good standing of Local 881 of a CFL-affiliated Union.

UFCW International Charity Foundation

Evaluation Criteria:

The scholarships are limited to any UFCW member who has been active since January 1, 2024. The children and/or dependents of active members are also eligible to apply if they are unmarried and under the age of 20 on May 25, 2025.

Scholarship Award Amounts:

In 2025, the UFCW Charity Foundation will award several Scholarships, up to $8,000 each. Scholarship recipients will receive annual payments of $2,000 for each year they are enrolled in an accredited college or university as a non-probationary student for up to four years.
