Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit

Expansion of the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit
As an overall percentage of their earnings, struggling families often pay twice as much as wealthier households do on state and local taxes combined.  In fact, national tax experts have called our system one of the most regressive systems in the country.

These pressures could grow still greater, if taxes are increased without proper attention to fairness.  The Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) provides low-income, working families with a well-deserved break on their taxes. This credit is currently worth a maximum of about $240 per qualifying household in Illinois.

Yet the EITC in Illinois is the second-smallest in the nation; other states' credits are worth up to eight times more.  As the state legislature considers increasing the Illinois income tax rate, working families deserve real, long-term tax relief through the EITC.

Please contact your state senator and representative now and tell them to:
Support increasing the size of the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to provide working families with the tax fairness they need and deserve.
