The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the OFFICIAL charity of the UFCW. Since 1983 when the partnership began, the UFCW and its' members have raised over $28 million dollars for LLS with every penny going toward research. Each year Local 881 hosts a golf outing to raise money for LLS. Any proceeds from Local 881-sponsored LLS fundraisers go directly towards funding research toward a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and other blood-related cancers.
About the Diseases:
Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Myeloma are cancers that originate in the bone marrow and lymphatic tissues. Cancers have two features in common: cells that are abnormal because of altered DNA, and cells that accumulate in excessive amounts. All of these cancers are considered to be related because they involve the uncontrolled growth of cells with related functions and origins. The diseases result from an acquired genetic injury to the DNA of a single cell, which becomes abnormal (malignant) and multiplies continuously. The accumulation of malignant cells interferes with the body's production of healthy blood cells and makes the body unable to protect itself against infection.
